Boracay's main beach is rated one, if not #1, of the best beaches in all the world by some leading publications and websites. I don't know if I would, based on my limited experience, put it there. I've been to some pretty nice beaches in Florida, Hawai'i, Bali, and Thailand, both Phuket and Koh Samui and I would say the nicest sand I've ever seen was on Sarasota (Florida) but Boracay has near the same texture, white, ashtray powder-like stuff but it had some trash on it, as well as a lot of flotsam. Maybe if it wasn't on there it would indeed be up there, but No.1?!, but it looks like too much tourism has spoilt a once amazing paradise. But I will say Boracay has some incredible sunsets and the weather is nice, it rained a bit on Aklan, the island to the southeast, where the two airports, Caticlan and Kalibo are located, and it rained about an hour one night on Boracay.

I stayed at the Lorenzo Grand Villa and I recommend this place highly, esp. for couples, it is a bit out of the way from the main beach but it's more romantic and much quieter.

If you are going to go to Boracay do yourself a favor and fly into Caticlan which is much closer. They fly jets (777s) into Kalibo but it's a 90-minute bus ride to the boat ferry whereas Caticlan is a convenient 5-minute ride so you will spend more of your time on the island. It cost me $110 for a roundtrip flight from Manila to Caticlan, which takes about 1 hour. This is Caticlan Airport! Pretty small, huh? It's tiny even compared to Thailand's Koh Samui Airport but is served by three airlines, Asian Spirit, Cebu Pacific and SE Air. I used Marsman Tours & Travel Corporation, which overcharged me 500 pesos, which while not a huge amount is ridiculous because they even admitted such on an email message, so I will not use them again, they are unethical, plain and simple, and I have warned my friends and acquaintances not to use them.

Regarding Boracay, note the high season is from December to Apirl. Christmas is also very popular - you may have trouble finding accommodation. May to June is ideal but rather hot, July to November is the low season and therefore the cheapest time to go while October and November have the best sunsets.

This is what you will see from the boat ride from Aklan to the island of Boracay:
