Kiyomizudera or "temple of pure water" [kiyo=pure/mizu=water/tera or dera=temple] is one of the most famous temples in all of Japan. Construction was completed in 798 and is set in the eastern part of Kyoto in a hilly area and offers great views of the city and surrounding landscapes. It's on most must-see list for tourists and is associated with Nara Buddhism, the oldest Buddhist sect in Japan. One can have a taste of the spring water, look for the long line, which is said to have healing power and gave the temple its name.
